Anansi's Big Bet
High in the green canopy of the silk-cotton tree, Anansi the Spider spun a silver silk harness. He looked up at the sky, thinking of how to bring the Sky God's stories down to the forest for all the animals to enjoy.
Anansi called up to the clouds, 'Sky God, I challenge you! If I capture three impossible creatures, will you give us your golden box so that every creature may share in your wonderful tales?'
The Sky God laughed with a rumble like thunder. 'Bring me a buzzing swarm of hornets, the great river python, and the fierce spotted leopard, and the golden box is yours!' Anansi nodded and swung down to begin his quest.
First, Anansi found the hornets buzzing around a giant flower. He trapped the entire swarm inside a dry hollow gourd and sealed the opening tightly with a soft clay plug.
Next, he laid a long bamboo pole along the riverbank and challenged the proud python to stretch out for measuring, binding him gently with forest vines before he could slip away.
Finally, Anansi dug a pit trap covered in green fern leaves, catching the leaping leopard in a sturdy web net as the big cat bounded through the clearing.
Anansi carried all three prizes up his silver thread to the Sky God. The Sky God tipped the golden box, and glowing tales drifted like fireflies through the forest branches for everyone to share.
