The Star Beneath the Waves

Deep within the indigo waters of Coral Cove, a tiny golden starfish named Stella clung to the shadows of the volcanic reefs. While the translucent moon jellyfish pulsed with blue neon light and the silver schools of mackerel flashed like polished mirrors in the tide, Stella possessed five thick, knobby orange arms that did not glimmer, flash, or shine in the dark waters.

Hoping to fit in with the shimmering midnight parade, Stella spent hours rubbing crushed pearl dust and iridescent clam shells against her leathery skin, trying in vain to mimic the luminous glow of the deep-sea reef creatures before the evening festival began.

One stormy evening, a violent underwater current swept through the channel, trapping a pod of young seahorses inside a narrow, pitch-black sea cave beneath the coral shelf where neither moonlight nor phosphorescence could penetrate the gloom.

While the fragile luminous fish were battered back by the sharp volcanic rocks and churning tides, Stella used her rugged, suction-tipped arms to anchor firmly against the stone walls, crawling steadily into the black caverns to guide the trapped seahorses safely out to open water.

Reaching the sunlit shallows, the grateful seahorses nestled among the sea fans, while the entire reef gathered along the sandy seafloor to welcome their brave rescuer.

Resting atop the highest coral spire with her sturdy golden arms spread wide against the rushing current, Stella anchored the dancing kelp forest as the morning tide brought fresh warmth and golden sunshine to the reef.
