The Secret Garden of Healing
Behind the old stone manor on Mill Lane, ten-year-old Mia discovered a rusted iron latch hidden beneath thick ivy vines that covered the high wall. Pushing open the heavy oak gate, she stepped into an overgrown courtyard where choked rosebushes struggled beneath dead thistles, dry nettles, and tangled brambles in the deep shadows.
Mia returned every afternoon with her mother's pruning shears and a sturdy wooden wheelbarrow. She carefully clipped away dry vines, cleared piles of rotting leaves from buried flower bulbs, and carried heavy buckets of cool well water from the courtyard pump to nourish the dry, thirsty soil.
One afternoon, her quiet classmate Oliver peeked curiously through the open iron gate, his hands jammed deep into his wool coat pockets. 'What are you doing all alone in the nettles and weeds?' he asked softly, watching her clear the stones.
Mia did not lecture him; she simply smiled and handed him a spare iron garden trowel and a paper packet of heirloom seeds. 'The sweet-pea seeds need deep trenches along the south wall,' she said, pointing to a sunny patch of dark, freshly tilled earth.
Oliver knelt in the dirt, digging steady furrows along the ancient stone garden wall. Working together day after day after school, they shared stories of their lessons and dreams while weeding the flowerbeds and planting rows of bright orange marigolds.
By midsummer, vibrant purple and crimson sweet peas climbed high upon the stone trellis, filling the sheltered courtyard with rich fragrance and dazzling color as the two friends watered the blooming garden side by side in the warm afternoon sunshine.
